Phoksundo/Rara Trekking

An overview

Rara which is also called Mahendra lake, the biggest lake of Nepal (10'8 km2) is in the Rara National Park, above 2981 meters of altitude from the sea level, in Mugu district. This Park is expanded in between the 1800 to 4048 meters of unevenness height and richly expands with forest of confers, pines, black junipers, oaks, Indian cypresses of the Himalayas, chestnuts, walnuts, poplar, etc. Is an ideal habitat for the red deer, the black bear of the Himalayas, and leopard, etc. The trout is the unique fish, which lives in the Rara Lake.

High ridges and deep gorges draw you on until at last you see the great Phoksumdo Lake, and towering above its western shores the 6612m Kanjiroba Peak, one of the most dramatically beautiful sights in the Himalaya. On your rest day here you will visit the Phoksumdo Gompa - a centuries old temple dedicated to the ancient Shamanistic Bon Po religion, the antecedent of Tibetan Buddhism which is still alive and well in these remote parts of the Himalaya. There is a possibility of sighting the rare blue sheep. Crossing a narrow gorges to eventually return to Dunai and Juphal from where you fly back to Kathmandu. This is an exceptional trekking to take what true Himalaya wilderness trekking can offer.
