Nar Phu Thorang Trek |
|
An overview |
|
Apart from the
odd researcher and climbers, Nar and Phu, the northern most
villages of Manang district remain relatively unexposed to the
outside world. Former restricted areas, Nar and Phu fall among a
number of new tourist destinations recently opened by His
Majesty's Government. Bordering Tibet and steeped in a pastoral
way of life, the two villages boast a wealth of culture, a
relatively untouched way of living and some breath-taking
scenery. Intrepid trekkers can combine a visit to Nar and Phu
with a trek to Tilicho, said to be the world's highest lake.
Formed from the glacial melt of the Annapurnas, Hindus regard
Tilicho as a holy site mentioned in the Ramayana. Local herdsmen
often find their way up to the lake in search of straying
animals.
Stamina, sheer determination and a steady pace, the essential
elements that are bound to get you across one of the highest
mountain passes in Nepal. At 5100, Thorong Pass on the Annapurna
Circuit can be quite demanding. But the high mountain spree will
allow you to observe Nepal's unique Himalayan geography. As you
cross Thorong Pass from Manang, you're bound to witness the
surrounding topography, the mountains, cliffs and gushing river
that give one a glimpse into how the mighty Himalayas were
formed when continents collided. |
