Kanchenjunga base camp trekking in Nepal

Trekking trip to Mt. Kanchenjunga "Treasures of Snow" (28,198ft) is the third highest mountain in the world. Kanchenjunga is high endurance trek starting with a pleasant drive to Basantpur all the way to the mountain masses. Kanchenjunga trekking is one of the most remote but most beautiful and least trekked areas in the eastern Himalayas of Nepal.

Kanchenjunga circuit or base camp trek first follows up Tamur valley along one of the oldest trade routes in the Himalayan through Sherpa villages, and lush rhododendron forests you climb on into high alpine terrain beyond the village of Gunsa. A camp established high above this village provides outstanding views of Kachanjunga's South face.

The trail goes further to the edge of the Kanchenjunga Glacier crossing the lateral moraine you will come to the Lhonak Glacier (15,680ft). After a couple of days rest and exploration at Lhonak, including a day trip to Pangpema (16,900ft) to admire the north face of Kangchenjunga, you will continue trek back passing the Lapsang La (16,760ft) and Sinion/Mirgin La (15,300ft) all the way Suketar to catch a flight to Biratnagar and a connecting flight from there to Kathmandu.

Kanchenjunga base camp really is still exploratory trekking and you must be prepared to take the trail as it comes but to look up at Kanchanjunga's towering south and north face is easily reward enough for your efforts.

Acclimatization:
Kanchenjunga as being a high-altitude trek, and the itinerary is planned with a high level of minimization of awareness of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness). Walking up to Pangpema 5,151m/16,900ft, the north base camp of Kanchenjungha, crossing the Lapsang La 5,108m/16,760ft and Sinion/Mirgin La 4,663m/15,300ft are the challenging sections of the trek so it requires days of acclimatization, hence your trek itinerary is gradually ascending getting up these heights where you expect less oxygen. It is essential to allow sufficient time for acclimatization as your body needs to adapt it. Sensible good planning is therefore required to minimize the risk of AMS.
